CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – Family and friends gathered Wednesday at Goldfinch Funeral Home during a private memorial service to remember the teenager who was shot and killed Oct. 16 at Carolina Forest High School.

Horry County Police say Trevor Varinecz, a junior at the school, stabbed a school resource officer, who then shot him.

Students at CFHS have said Varinecz was autistic and had previously threatened others in his class; but Wednesday, those at the memorial service remembered the good.

Priscilla Cotter attended the service and says she didn’t know Varinecz, but her daughter won’t forget him.

“My daughter went to middle school with him and she was very touched by him and said that he was one of the nicest, funniest boys that she had ever met,” Cotter said. “I just felt that I needed to support the parents.”

Dr. Kirk Lawton led the memorial service.

“It was very moving. Actually, a very wonderful service, and a tribute to a young man,” Lawton commented. “The family is coping as well as a family can cope under the difficult loss of a wonderful son.”

Cotter agreed, hoping that even these difficult circumstances can bring lessons of acceptance: “Maybe just to make sure that even if people are different, that we respect what they are, and find the good in them, and just try to promote that good in people.”
