Should St. Lucie County reinstate the teacher who had a student “voted out” of class?

Vote her back in?

By The Palm Beach Post

The St. Lucie school board votes Tuesday on whether to declare this “School Psychology Week.”

Bet they do.

But another vote is more controversial. The board is being asked to declare that Wendy Portillo is fit to teach again.

Ms. Portillo is the teacher who last year asked her kindergarten kids to vote Alex Barton out of class. At the time, Alex was in the middle of evaluations that soon led him to be diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism.

When Alex was voted out of class, it created a firestorm of criticism. In effect, it also created School Psychology Year for the district, which says it has improved education and support for teachers students dealing with similar issues.

We thought the teacher should have been fired. But the school board voted to suspend Ms. Portillo instead and now is poised to let her return to the classroom teaching sixth-graders.

What do you think? Should Ms. Portillo be reinstated?
