Breaks my heart, if only some one was there to pull her back before this happened. I fear it will be happening more in the light of cutbacks to services that are so badly needed for our population whose needs are far more complex than other disabilities.

I dont think I have ever heard such a profound statement of disability snobbery in my life! While I feel for your situation, I certainly do not think its appropriate to belittle children with milder and hidden disability. In regards to ADHD, (which by the way I do not consider a mild disability) try telling a parent who has not had sleep in a week, who has to have all of their doors permanently locked that their child should not be classed as special needs. I guarantee you it would not go down well! Has it occured to you that these children that you speak of, possibly have more underlying issues that have not yet been diagnosed? And if you were the parent of one of these children are you saying that you would not want or need services and a diagnosis? Hmmm! I think you would!

Rosa, You are so wrong on this! I have worked as a Social Worker for 15+ years, in Disability Services, and have family members diagnosed with Adhd and Aspergers Syndrome. Children with high functioning autism cannot attend Special Schools because their intellect is too high. But their disability is not obvious & children with ASD's are regularly labelled as "bad" by teachers who do not understand their condition. Unfortunately, some Educators share your attitude, and even when the child comes from the Paediatrician with a diagnosis, they can choose to disbelieve that diagnosis. Ignorance caused my 8 year old grandson and his family unbelievable suffering, and it took his amazing mother and I two years advocating strongly with authorities to get this child the support he needed to attend school. Don't think that just because a child looks "normal" that they cannot be severely disabled. My grandson has five neurological disorders: Autism, Adhd, Epilepsy, Language Disorder Expressive & Receptive and Tourrettes Syndrome. His life is not easy, and never will be, but we are teaching him mind mastery; he is learning how to manage his condition so that he can reach his true potential. Please do not generalise about disabilities. Every mother (and grandmother) suffers deep grief when their child has a disability. Generalised judgements such as yours are extremely damaging.

It makes my blood boil when someone from such a privileged background pronounces on what us common people should and shouldn't be doing with our children

ASD is often an invisible disability. I don't know a single parent who wanted their child 'labelled' and I certainly am not aware of schools pushing children to be labelled or supported for SEN. It is a battle every step of the way.

Here the UK parents of children with ASD must be very vigilant about views like hers gainining political traction as they will be used to cut, cut and cut again the support for children with AS, ASD and associated complex disorders. She is just doing the dirty work of the Tory government - coming from a long line of Tories including a father in law who was Chancellor of the Exchequer under Thatcher

Up until a few months ago, I was a special education teacher and I can guarantee you that your logic is flawed and your facts are incorrect. There are children besides the severe and profound that need educational special services, and the mild to moderate children are no less deserving.

Dyslexia is very real and a dyslexic child does need help, yet did you know that not all states recognize Dyslexia as a disability? They don't even test for it. Oppositional Defiant Disorder, ADD, and other learning disabilities are very valid.

Also, schools LOOSE federal funding if they have more than a certain percentage of children labeled as special education needs, and its a fairly low percentage (7%, I believe). Schools are not labeling children who are not in need as disabled and are testing them out of special education programs as soon as the kids are ready.

I no longer teach due to my own disability and disability snobbery, or "my disability is worse than yours" really gets under my skin.

Is this article referring to the Diagnoses of Autism..or the entire spectrum? My son has Aspergers...he learned to ride a bike at 5 with no trouble. Seems like many Aspies can master the gross motor skills from my experience.
thanks

This story is wonderful. It makes me thing of the lyrics from "All He Has To Say" (Autism Song) by Aika Hirahara

Here's a quote from the song:

His eyes filled with emotion
An innocent look on his face
As the silence filled the room
I wished for just one day
I could give him a voice
And hear all he has to say
All he has to say
All he has to say…

Where’s the link we need
That piece to make it whole
I need my little boy back
I need what autism stole

This just blows my mind. I and many other parents have given their up their hopes, dreams and careers to ensure the safety and welfare of their autistic children. I just cannot believe anyone would do this to a any child.
